Family Portraits: Kids vs Adults

Over the holiday break I had the opportunity to photograph two beautiful, and very different families. The first family includes 13 siblings ranging in age from 1 to 19. They are my first cousins, and they're pretty much the coolest kids in town. You've actually seen a few of them on here before (Ali's Bag // Mikey G // Cute Kids //  Doodle Roll). My aunt organized the shoot because she wanted to give the portrait as a gift to my uncle. We took the photos on a chilly day, and the kids were troupers even though their adorable matching sweatshirts didn't offer much protection from the cold.

When it comes to photographing children, especially a large group of them, you never know what you're going to get. While we ended up with some really great shots, I thought it would be fun to share an example of one of the photos that didn't quite make the cut. Still cute though!

The second family I photographed was that of my sister's fiance Joe, which includes his brother, sister, his brother's girlfriend, and of course his fiance. While the cold weather of this shoot was similar to the kids' shoot, photographing a family of adults was very different. Instead of worrying if the babies were looking at the camera, we had to worry about things like making sure everyone's hair looked perfect. However, it was still just as fun to photograph this group as it was the kids. And, these photos were also a family gift from the "kids" to their parents.

I figured that it was only fair that I also share some photos from this shoot that didn't make the cut. Especially since they're pretty good proof that photographing adults can be fun too. At the end of the shoot, Joe's brother decided that there was a perfect photo opp just beyond this fence. So, with a running start and a literal leap of faith, he cleared it. You know how brothers are, if the younger brother can do something, there's no way in heck the older one can't. Unfortunately, Joe's slow jog combined with a last minute stutter step, didn't land him quite where he wanted. But, it did get a lot of laughs and we wrapped up the photo shoot with everyone still smiling. 

I really enjoyed being the photographer behind both of these family photos, and look forward to doing more in the future. So, if you're due for an updated family portrait, you know where to find me!
