Queen Bey in Boston

Last week, on behalf of Pepsi, I had the absolute pleasure of attending my first Beyoncé concert while she was in Boston for her Mrs. Carter Show World Tour. Have you ever been to one of her shows? She is seriously amazing! Her entire performance was so high energy, and my friend Joanne and I danced the whole time.

The TD Garden was packed with more women than I have ever seen in one place, and all of them were dressed to the nines. Though heels aren't usually the best option when attending a concert, there wasn't an un-heeled foot in the place. I was glad that Joanne and I had taken some time beforehand to consider what one should wear to a Beyoncé show. I think we fit right in.

One of my favorite songs that Beyoncé performed was "Love on Top", but it was also pretty amazing when she belted out an old school Destiny's Child song! I found that the videos playing on the screens on stage and the lighting, were just as fascinating as Bey herself. Combined, these things made for one heck of a show. If you didn't make it to the show this time, you're in luck, she'll be back here in Boston on December 20th. Woop woop!

Last week, you may have noticed that I was tweeting using the hashtag #iconicsummer throughout the concert. Pepsi's Iconic Summer Moments site is a site working to donate to charities in need. You can get involved and be entered to win a Pepsi Prize pack by uploading a photo from your favorite summer moment to the Iconic Summer site using #iconicsummer! And, while attending a concert is always an iconic summer moment for me, it doesn't have to be yours. So, get creative!

Ladies of the 90's: A playlist + A Fashion Guide

Brace yourself guys, this post is going to bring you right back to the good ole days of yin yang earrings, smiley face t-shirts, scrunchies, and clippies. If you're like  me, every now and then, that's exactly where you want to be! The 90's holds a very special place in my heart as that's where the majority of my youth was spent. Although I've long since grown out of the styles of the 90's, the music from that decade still blasts through my headphones on a regular basis. There's something to be said about the ladies that ruled the radio back then. Two decades later I'm still not sick of those songs.

Doesn't today seem like the perfect day to jam out to some of them? Of course it does! So obviously I made a playlist of some of my absolute faves. But, before we get to the music, I couldn't write a post about the 90's without reflecting on the fashion of the time. I'll be honest, some of the fads we went through were ridiculous even though I look back on them with fond memories. But, it wasn't all that bad. In fact, I've found that some of the famous ladies from the 90's seem to be an inspiration for looks that we love today.

With a little perusing through Pinterest, I was able to find some outfits that appear to be a modern take on classic 90's styles (even if that wasn't the intent). It's fun to compare and see how much has changed, but also to see what has stayed the same. Things like boyfriend jeans (1 & 2), chambray and polka dots (3 & 4), leather jackets and sunnies (5 & 6), and bold maxi dresses (7 & 8).

While I'm fresh out of wide leg jeans, I definitely have a couple of crop tops and grunge sweaters in my closet. Do you have any favorite pieces in your wardrobe that have a slight link back to the 90's? While you consider this, now would be a good time to get that playlist going. Enjoy!

Saint Patrick's Day Playlist + A Story From My Dad

I am so excited to be sharing this special post with all of you today! This sunday is Saint Patrick's Day, one of my favorite holidays. Being Irish, my family has always celebrated this holiday to the fullest, and I think that is why I love it so much. I remember my mother making us a breakfast of green pancakes and green orange juice, then making corned beef and cabbage for dinner, and my Dad letting us wear his fun Saint Patrick's Day t-shirts to school, and playing Irish music all day. When the music filled the Connolly house, you knew it was time to celebrate! When putting together my St. Patrick's Day playlist for the blog, I knew there was one person who could do it better than me; my Dad. Today he is sharing his favorite Irish songs with all of you, along with the story of how he came to love this music. And, of course I had to sprinkle in some photos of our young Irish family (before there were 7 of us kids) just to add some cuteness. Enjoy!

Mom, Dad, and siblings at Castle Island in South Boston (I was the photographer)
-- I started listening to Irish music long ago when I was about 8 or 9. I can remember going to my father's work on an occasional Saturday, when he didn't have much work on the docket for that day and he would be playing his old radio in his office and we would listen to the 'Irish Hit Parade" AM 950 on your listening dial. He would tell me of his younger singing days when he would win singing contests at Dorgans restaurant in Southie, by singing his go to song "Danny Boy". Every time he would demonstrate how he sang that song, he would break into his Irish brogue and croon that ballad with an Irish twinkle in his eye. He probably could've won those amature singing shows on just looks alone, but to my suprise, he was actually a very good singer. He would tell me he could sing that song better than anyone around, with the exception of one, and that "one", was Ireland's own Red Hurley who sang his favorite version of the song, "Danny A Peace Trilogy". To this very day, it is my favorite version of the song as well.

As I went through my teen years, my listening to Irish music had been put on the shelf for a while, but then had a rebirth when I got to high school. Two teachers of mine, George Ghiorse and Bill Martin, would occassionally break out their guitars and banjos and play Irish song as well as American Folk and New England Sea songs during class time; (the deal was, no English or History today, as long as we would learn the songs and sing along....of course we chose to sing). Shortly after graduation Mae (my wife to be) and I went to visit her cousin at college, and we happened to run into (or trip over) Bill Martin who coincidentally was also at the college reveling in some Oktoberfest music festival, and it was apparent that the Oktoberfest portion of the festivities (the beer) had gotten the best of Bill as he was sprawled out on one of the connecting walkways between buildings and looking as if he had just come from a Grateful Dead concert. After talking to Bill for a while, he had suggested to come see "The O'Reilly's" sometime (the Irish band he and George were in).

Well sometime came that St. Patty's Day in 1982 at Rafferty's Pub in Marshfield MA. It was my first St. Patty's Day celebration in a pub and not at the parade on a freezing cold sidewalk in Southie that I had experienced so many times as kid. The pub was busting at the seams with wall to wall people, March Madness Basketball was on the many televisions hovering the bar, the beer was flowing, and the music (The O'Reilly's) was whipping everyone into an Irish Pride frenzy. I was instantly hooked, not only on celebrating St. Patty's Day, but on listening to traditional Irish music as well.

Taking a St. Patrick's Day walk with Dad
At this time bands like The Pogues, The Waterboys, and of course U2 were just hitting the scene in the U.S., and it was great to be able to enjoy both the new and the old bands together, furthuring my interest in not only just the music, but the culture and history of Ireland as well. For the next 28 years, wherever the "O'Reilly's played on St. Patrick's Day, I was sure to be there, and with each passing year, I was able to influence others including my parents, family and friends to come join in on the fun of "my" favorite holiday (actually Christmas is #1 but March 17th is a close 2nd) and to reconnect with our Irish heritage.

Although the O'Reilly's have recently retired, I have discovered a new band to celebrate St. Patty's Day with---they are called "The Green Rovers", and they consist of two young guys from Weymouth; one of which is originally from County Clare Ireland. Both these gents are extremely talented, as they have been schooled at the Berkely School Of Music in Boston. They are the perfect crossover band of playing the traditional songs as well as the newer stuff. I have seen them perform many times, and I am amazed at how gifted and versed they are at playing their many different instruments. F.Y.I. they will be at The Bailey Pub in Brant Rock in Marshfield this St. Patrick's Day.

When I was asked by my daughter Amy if I would like to submit a playlist and possibly a story for her blog, I was very eager to do so. I was also happy to know that she would value my "expert opinion" of song choices that would create a playlist that would set the tone for the big day. I am also pleased to know that Amy has been influenced over the years of my love for all types of music, as we share very similar tastes in music styles and genres. This is probably due to the fact that on so many long road trips in the car, before the invention of iPods and the like, everyone in the car had no choice but to listen to the tapes or cd's that I had brought. I must admit, with so many great Irish songs to choose from, I found it very difficult to narrow it down to a few for the "perfect" playlist. With that, I gave Amy a list of my top 100 Irish songs. From that list I picked some of my current favorites songs for "the" blog playlist for all to enjoy. Happy St. Patrick's Day. --

I've included just about all of my Dad's choices in this playlist, but if you're curious as to what his top 15 song choices were, here they are...

Valentine's Day Playlist

Happy Valentine's Day everyone!! I know some people say that Valentine's day is just a corporate holiday invented by Hallmark, but I don't think there's anything wrong with having a day to celebrate love. It's all about what you make of it anyway. If you avoid the stores and instead take the time to tell your loved ones that you love them, there's nothing corporate about that!

If I'm being completely honest, I have always had a pretty hard time putting my feelings into words. Whether I'm saying them out loud, or writing them down, I feel like I can never truly express the emotions that I'm feeling, and I don't know why. But, that's why there's music! I think there are some songs that can say what I want to say better than I ever could. So, today, I'm sharing my favorite love songs of all time with you guys. I hope I've included some of your favorites too. Have a great Valentine's Day everyone!

A Year in Review: 2012

Happy New Year everyone!! I'm so happy to be back, and I'm feeling refreshed and rejuvenated from my break. I am very much looking forward to all the things to come in the year 2013, but first I want to take a look back on the past year and reflect on all the great things that I saw, heard, made, and experienced.

I had so many fun adventures in 2012, and the year got off to a great start with (1.) a trip to Las Vegas with my sister to see Celine Dion in concert. It's no secret that I'm a Celine fan, so this was a huge highlight of the year. (2.) I took another little trip a few months later to New York City with my brother to see The Newsies on Broadway. The show was so amazing and I'd absolutely love to see it again! (3.) One of the biggest highlights of the year was my older sister's engagement to her boyfriend Joe. She's the first of our siblings to be getting married, and we're all so excited! (4.) 2012 was the year I finally bought myself a nice new digital camera. It has made all the difference in the world on my blog, and makes it so much fun to capture my adventures. (5.) This summer I attended my very first Boston Bloggers event, and I have since been opened to so many opportunities as well as new friendships. I love being a part of such a wonderful, engaging community! Through Boston Bloggers, I met Smita of Hogger&Co, and was lucky to be a part of her Style Profile series. That awesome experience led to Smita offering me the opportunity to (6.) photograph from the Press Pit at The Tent at Boston Fashion Week. As someone who loves both fashion and photography, this was certainly a memorable part of 2012!

2012 was a pretty big year for Instagram, and I jumped right on board when I got my iphone over the summer. These are a few of my favorite snapshots from the year. (1.) Princess the pig at Nihtila Farm...OinkOink! (2.) A beautiful chandelier at The Boston Opera House where I saw The Nutcracker for the first time. (3.) The sun setting behind willow trees at the Boston Public Garden. (4.) A view of Wollaston Beach in Quincy near my old apartment. (5.) Coffee is served during brunch at Papa Razzi on Newbury Street in Boston. (6.) View from the ski lift at Gunstock Mountain in New Hampshire.

In 2012 I celebrated my 1 year blog anniversary and from that point I decided to step up my game a bit. I increased my blogging frequency and had a lot of posts to show for it! These are some of my favorites from the year.

I feel like 2012 was a really good year for music. I loved the folk sound that came from so many bands, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't love me a little 'Call Me Maybe' too. I've compiled a playlist of 12 of my favorite songs from 2012, so take a listen and enjoy. And, now that we've taken a look back, let's look to the future, and hope for many more great things to come! Cheers!

What I'm Listening To: Christmas

Well, we've officially reached the "less than two weeks til Christmas" mark! I feel like a little kid counting down the days, but I'm just so excited to be able to spend extra time with my family! Plus, having a ten year old brother means that Christmas Spirit is still alive and well at home! And, judging by all the exclamation points I've used already, it's obviously still alive and well in me. The holiday season is a time full of so many family traditions, and one of mine revolves around music...

Each Christmas morning began the same way, with my siblings and I in our bedrooms giddy with anticipation at the crack of dawn (often times earlier). But, to spare our parents from exhaustion, we had to wait until 6am before waking them up. At 6:00 on the button we'd call down the stairs to wake them up, and then wait for the response... music. Once that Christmas music started playing it was go time! We'd make our way downstairs (single file - youngest to oldest), and when we reached the living room, mayhem ensued. The good kind of mayhem, filled with screeches of "I got just what I wanted!" And all the while, that Christmas music was playing, being engrained in our minds as a link to some very happy memories.

This photo is a pretty great link to those happy memories too...way back when there were only 3 of us! There are 7 of us now, and even though we don't all live at home, we still make our way back at the crack of dawn to keep the tradition alive. (P.S. how great are our outfits? My creative Mom made them for us!)

Today I want to share with you some of my favorite Christmas songs. For me, Christmas wouldn't be the same without these, and I hope I've included some of your favorites as too!

(Please note that Mom & Dad did not play N'Sync Christmas music. I brought that upon myself, and I think my Dad would be horrified if anyone thought otherwise! Sigh, same goes for Celine Dion)
What are some of your go-to Christmas songs? I'd love to hear them!

What I'm Listening To

Music is a huge part of my life; I enjoy listening to it, playing it, and seeing live shows. I often find myself inspired by the music I'm listening to, and not just by what I'm hearing, but by the mood that it puts me in. So today I want to share the music that's inspiring me at the moment in hopes that you can be inspired as well. After all, music was made for sharing, and I couldn't keep these to myself (see the playlist below). I'm particularly fond of the sweet sounds of the six-strings in these songs - especially when they're combined with other stringed instruments. Take a listen yourself and enjoy!
