Wait a minute, is it seriously March already? I can't even believe it, but the weather today already feels like we're getting close to spring. And, it's Friday! I'm so ready for the weekend! But, before I can get to that, I have something exciting that I want to talk to you about today. For the past few months, my friend Melanie had been telling me how she wanted to start a group in Boston where young women involved in the digital, social, experiential, and online marketing field, could get together to chat and network face to face. I loved the idea, and when she came to me last month to design a logo for the group, I was thrilled to see that her dream was becoming a reality.
Melanie started the group with two other marketing professionals, Nicole Troelstrup and Na Eun Park, and together they decided to name the group "Young Women in Digital". For a logo, the girls were looking for something sleek and modern, possibly with a little sparkle. So, with all the information in hand, I got to work on the design.
When designing a logo, I like to start off simple and then let the design process develop naturally. I add different elements and then take them away and try again until I find the perfect formula. I don't know if it's the best way to work, but it's what works for me.
After I sent the final logo over to the girls, they got right to work on getting the word out about the very first Young Women in Digital event. I did my part by designing the eventbrite flyer, and then immediately signed up to attend! The event was hosted at Cafeteria Boston on Newbury Street and was completely sold out ... not bad for a kick off event huh?! The goal of the event was for all of the women to have a chance to meet everyone there. So, it was arranged as a "speed meet & tweet", where you got 4 minutes to talk to someone before a bell would ring and you moved on to the next person. The women were encouraged to tweet during the event (using the hashtag #YWDBoston) as a way to connect with everyone they had just met, to get the word out about the group, and for a chance to win a Starbucks gift card! Once the speed meeting was through, most of the gals stuck around to continue conversations. It was such a unique experience, and I left feeling like I had made some great new connections.
Unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to take any pictures during the event, (I was too busy meeting and tweeting) but Melanie shared some in her event recap on her blog I Love Love. The girls are planning to host a Young Women in Digital event every month with different activities each time. I can't wait for the next one! If you're a young woman in the Boston area, involved in any of the digital categories, or hoping to be someday, you should totally come to the next event! Make sure you follow YWD on Facebook to stay in the loop.
